“It’s not insane to imagine that sometimes even horrible people are searching for a way out of their own darkness.”
After spending the better part of the last year moping since the release of Restore Me, I’ve been anticipating reading this. I needed answers for the excruciating cliffhanger Tahereh Mafi left us with and Defy Me had all the answers.
If you’re reading this review then you’ve probably read all the Shatter Me books to this point. Then you also probably know that the series originally ended with Ignite Me but there are now three more to the total story arc. With Restore Me I couldn’t figure out why Mafi was continuing on with this world, but I didn’t complain because… well, Warner. Defy Me, on the other hand, made the world whole.
With everything that is learned in Defy Me, I view the first three in a totally different light. Defy Me provides the answers to most questions that have been left unanswered and questions I didn’t even have. Somehow, even though most of the book was dumping information on the reader, it did not come off as an info dump. I never needed a break thinking “I can’t read any more information.” In fact, this is the fastest it has taken me to read a Shatter Me book and it took me less than twelve hours. I really enjoyed it.
Mostly the book got me excited and ready for the next one in a very different way than I was last time. I’m not moping this time and I’m so curious about how this series will wrap up.
Things are definitely complicated now, there’s a clear direction, and plenty of characters that I want to learn more about. March 3, 2020 needs to be here ASAP.
