Iron Flame (The Empyrean, #2)

“Violence, remember it’s only the body that’s fragile. You are unbreakable.”

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

Oh second book syndrome… While I am very much enjoying this series, my biggest gripe is that this book could’ve been split into two. Why does every fantasy these days have to be 800+ pages? Maybe Sarah J Maas is to blame for that.

It Happened One Summer (Bellinger Sisters, #1)

It Happened One Summer by Tessa Bailey

Trying to figure out what to do when no one is watching. And wondering if maybe that’s the stuff that actually matters.

Rating: 5 out of 5.

In my fierce attempt to hit my reading goal for 2023, I read a lot of contemporaries that are best suited near a body of water like a pool. And this one definitely falls under that umbrella, but I really enjoyed reading this.

Just because a dream isn’t elaborate doesn’t mean it isn’t extraordinary.

Rating: 2 out of 5.

This is a Hallmark Christmas movie put to paper, but for me it wasn’t as entertaining. Maybe next Christmas season I’ll do a better job of picking a festive read.

Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros

“The right way isn’t the only way.”

Rating: 4 out of 5.

One of the latest books in a string of many fantasies that has not only taken BookTok by storm, but many of my friends’ lives by storm as well. After a little peer pressure and a comparison or two or ACOTAR, I finally caved and picked up Fourth Wing. I haven’t been this on trend in years.

From the Grave (The Arcana Chronicles, #6)

From the grave, I rise for you.

Rating: 5 out of 5.

It’s kinda weird that I’m sitting down to write this review. I’ve been reading this series since 2013 and that just so happens to be the year that I really got back into reading since I was a child. So this series has been in my life almost longer than it hasn’t and I never really expected it to end.

Of course everything comes to an end eventually, but for some reason I never expected this series to actually reach its conclusion. So here we are at the end, reeling from all that unraveled within those 356 pages.

I was actually pretty stoic through reading it but now looking back on it and thinking about my thoughts, I’m getting a bit teary-eyed.

Going into this book I had a few things I expected to happen. I didn’t know how – or if they would – but the natural progression of the story had all arrows pointing at my hunches. But…more on that later.

This was a bittersweet ending. It was sweet because I think Kresley Cole really did a nice job giving us everything we needed to say goodbye to these characters and this world. It was a little bitter because of course I don’t want to say goodbye. It’s such an interesting concept and I’ve loved diving into these books every few years when a new one releases. Not having that to look to anymore feels weird!

So let’s jump right into it. I’ll give you fair warning that this will be under a spoiler tag so if you don’t want to be ruined…

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

“Sometimes life hands you more than a new hand of cards to play—it hands you a whole new deck, maybe even a whole new game.”

This series is somehow mostly predictable but hard to put down. And I think that’s the charm.

Paranormal novels have really been capturing me lately in a way they haven’t in a long time, and Munro came along at the perfect time.

“There’s not much to be afraid of when you’ve already lost everything that matters.”

Rating: 4 out of 5.

It’s been a long time since I’ve read a vampire book – well… The Awakening aside. Okay. It’s been a long time since I’ve read a new vampire book. Crave was an incredibly fun read that doesn’t take itself seriously, isn’t afraid to reference other vampire books, and was the type of fun I got out of reading Twilight for the first time in 2008.

I’m playing with fire, with something I don’t understand.

Rating: 3 out of 5.

I started watching The Vampire Diaries in like… 2011. Back when only the first two seasons were on Netflix. It feels like a lifetime ago. This year, my roommate and I decided to re-watch the show and start The Originals and Legacies. So basically my entire summer and start of the fall was consumed by the VDCU (Vampire Diaries Cinematic Universe). Listen, The Vampire Diaries stands the test of time. It’s so good. I’ve never read the books so I figured maybe now is the time to get out of my reading slump and see what was changed from book to show. And well…

“Keep reaching out your hand.”

Rating: 5 out of 5.

It’s absolutely no surprise that I had to immediately pick up this book upon its release. I took a shamefully long time to read it considering how much I enjoy this world. But fair warning, this new continuation is much more adult than the first three books. Like…much more.
